February Updates: Closures, Events, Programs

Happy February Students and Parents!

We have some new events, as well as the return of some programs and events we’ve had in the past.

The My Best List Makes a Comeback This Month

Parents rejoice! We are bringing back one of our favorite outside the dojo programs, the My Best List. This is a system that we use to help us track our student’s progress as not only karate-ka, but as members of our community. It also gives parents an easy way to help encourage their children to get the usual tasks at home done. We will be reestablishing this system next week, starting February 10th. We are going to implement a tracking system for students ages 12 and under, so they can compare their progress to their classmates, as well as rewards for students with outstanding participation and effort. We will explain more about the program to students in class next week, as well as provide the first round of handouts, but let us know if you have any questions!

Tournament Class Cancelled 2/14

The tournament class will be cancelled on Friday February 14th for Walla Walla. We will still have weapons class that day from 5:30-6:30, however due to a handful of our students and staff travelling that day, we don’t have the staffing to stay open for tournament class as well. This will also be the case for any other tournaments that the team is travelling a good distance for (ex. Yakima)

President’s Day Closure

We will be closed Monday, February 17th, 2020 for Presidents’ Day. Our make-up policies remain the same as for MLK day in January; but please reach out to us if you have any questions.

Buddy Day + Bully Busting

Leading up to Anti-Bullying Day at the end of February, we will be hosting a Buddy Day/Bully Busting Combo Event on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm. This event will merge the fun and games of our usual Buddy events with some more focused and practical life skills, found in our Bully Busting Program. This will be a free event, however we will have a signup sheet, and buddies will be required to have our waiver signed by a parent or guardian before participating. Let your friends know so they can take advantage of this event, and we will have the handouts and signup sheets available in the dojo soon.

IEAAU Regional Championships added to Tournament List

The Inland Empire Regional Qualifier has been added to our list of valuable tournaments for students in our tournament class, and will be March 7th, 2020 in Lewiston Idaho (right on the border of Eastern WA) Check in with your Sensei to see if you qualify.

Testing Dates Announced

To help our students plan to attend our testing sessions, we have decided to announce our next firm testing date, as well as a ballpark of what we are shooting for after that. Saturday March 21st is locked in as our next testing day, so if you’ve missed past sessions or feel that your eligibility is coming up; block that day off so you don’t miss it! We try to plan testing to be every 6 weeks or so, so here are the next tentative dates: May 2nd, June 13th, and July 25th. Please reach out if you have legitimate concerns about your testing eligibility, however remember this is a private matter and should not be discussed during class time.

2020 Pacific Northwest AAU District Championship

On Saturday, March 28th we will be hosting our spring tournament at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel in Lynnwood, WA. Online registration is now available at www.karatetmaster.com. Please note that you must have a current AAU membership to compete. All students should plan to participate as an athlete and/or volunteer. Additionally, we could not do this without our parent volunteers to help us with registration, time keeping, and score keeping. Please let us know if you are available to assist! We are looking forward to a great tournament. Don’t hesitate to speak to a Sensei if you have any questions.
